Piranha are members of the Serrasalminae sub-family of Characins. The Characins is the group of fish, primarily from South America and Africa, that is best known as the Tetras. The Serrasalminae sub-family of Tetras contains the Piranha and their close cousin, the pacu. These fish are from South America and have many similarities in both appearance and behavior.
Piranha are generally large fish, though most species of Piranha are not nearly as large as most species of Pacu. Smaller species or Piranha reach around 10 centimeters in length and larger species grow to about 30 Cm .
Piranha generally live for four to fifteen years, depending on the species and quality of care given (larger varieties tend to live longer).
Piranhas have an undeserved bad reputation people think that piranha is an evil fish which will devour anything on its path , thats not true at all they are actually skittish fish when you kept them in an aquarium and they are very interesting fish to kept as I've kept 4 RedBellied Piranhas for 2 years and Piranha is a cool fish especially when it comes to the feeding time .
My RedBellied Piranhas (Pygocentrus Natteri) they are about 7-10 cm |
